Sorry. I don't know. I don't use TIFF. MY workflow is: shooting in RAW. Convert to JPEG for print or web posting. So, when I PS the photo, it's in JPEG anyway.

I think you are not taking the full advantage of RAW if you don't use 16 bit TIFF, since the dynamic range is propably much higher, though I must admit that I never run any one-to-one comparison.
Maybe you can try a slightly different workflow: convert RAW into 16 bit tiff. Adjust whatever need to be adjusted and then converted to 8 bit TIFF/JPEG. And then run the layer adjustment into B&W as you mentioned. It will be an interesting experiment to see if there is any difference.
