I agree with you that there are some social differnce behine this. But I don't agree with you on that: 在加拿大，你不干活，政府可以养着你，他们当然可以说relaxing 和enjoyable. The western tradition don't really mean that the children don't have to work when they grow up, but it emphasize more on what kind of work they want to do are the choice of the children, not the parents. Their tradition pay more attention on independence, confidence, and ability of organization. But among Chinese, we pick the careers for the kids and then spend all of our money and energy to ensure they achieve that goal, while in the process itself, forget to educate them those fundamental aspects.
You are right that 五陵少年，八旗子弟 know how to enjoy the life, but how long those life can last if your next generation don't know to manage that, and live a healthy but not luxury life and more improtant, know how to creat more wealth.
