You are right in basic comparations. But the point was we are here in Canada or we are in Ottawa not because things are cheaper and in huger varieties.
We must be here for a reason. For example, tuition fees are much higher and living expenses are much higher than those in China. Some of us are here to pursue higher learning, not here to looking for cheaper stuff.
Got it?

Dear CCC, I am sure you are here in Ottawa for a very good reason, just like most of the people here in the forum. However, part of us being here is living here, and every day life here eventually comes down to the dollar amount we make and spend everyday. At least for me, I will have to make sure how much I spend is no greater than what I make. Having a limited income every month tells me that I will have to make the best use of my money: shopping around for the best deals for the items I need within my budget. Having shopped around part of the country (Toronto and Montreal) and in the US (some outlet malls in NY and MA), I concluded that the merchandise here in Ottawa is more expensive and of less variety. Thus, 1) I do not think there is anything wrong shopping for good deals (or cheaper stuff as you would say) 2) definitely nobody should tell me how I live my life and where I live 3) Until I make $1,000,000, I will keep doing 1). Done and Out
