It does not matter; take I-87 south (through thousand island) or I-81 south (montreal), connect I-90 east/Mass Pike (toll) and I-95 South (around Boston) all the way to NYC. refill your gas tank when you get to MA or RI (cheaper than in NY, of course in Canada it more expensive). You will pass Albany (NY), Boston (MA), and Providence (RI) on your way. Getting into NYC can be a headache, try to avoid rush hours and weekend. When you come back, try to refill your tank on the US side, it will save some money. It will take you 9-10 hours, one way.
