neither one is better than another. Nikon and Canon, each has their own ups and downs. Nikon was once very good in still 135 world. Then photography turns into digital, Canon has outperformed Nikon, became the biggest player in this field. But it is by no means "better" than Nikon. In photography world, it is all about lenses. camera is considered as a accessory of lenses. Canon's flagship in digital world is 1Ds Mark II. That is a real beast. Nikon can not offer anything comparable. It seems that Nikon is having a hard time to keep up with Canon. Not even Nikon, there is actually no one comes close to Canon in pro market. (yes, yes, Kodak has DCS. But, besides the size of sensors, there aren't anything comparable to 1Ds MarkII). Obviously, Canon is leading of this entire digital photography world at least for now.

So the answer is: if you can afford a 1Ds Mark II and L class lenses. Go with Canon! there is no way you will get disappointed. if you can not afford it. and if you are new to DSL world. Really, both Nikon and Canon offers great cameras and more importantly as I said a while ago, great lenses. Since the lenses from either party are not interchangable, you need to make up your mind now, then stay with one side. If you need help on selecting brand. you can ask friends who have already had one, listen to what they have to say. Also, do some research in the Internet. By now, you should have something in mind. then go to a camera store, try them out by yourself. see which one you like better. This is pretty much what I did when I came to the same situation as you are now.

The whole point is at this pro-sumer level, either brand offers great cameras and lenses. It is safe to pick either one. you will be happy ever then.

As what I am getting at, there is one field you must go with Canon - indoor sport photography. In this field, you can see no other brand. It has to be Canon. Why? Lenses. Canon makes fastest zoom lenses.

I myself is a Canon user. The reason I picked Canon was my first digital camera was a Canon S400. And it blow me away by its outstanding performance. It is a point and shot camera. by no means, a pro camera. but it has been a very good companion to me ever since I bought it. It was in my bag everywhere I went. It was the best camera I have ever had. Now I am getting a Canon Rebel XT. I picked this little guy instead of its big brother 20D, purely because, I wanted to invest more on lenses. Again (and again), lenses stay, cameras come and go.

it is all about lenses! Now you must have understood why Leica is the best. you got it. Leica's lenses are made of diamonds. :-D or it must be...

Suggest you go to Henry's and give a test run of both Nikon and Canon body. You may have your preference right away.

thanks a lot, i'm not very familiar with photography, and i had my eyes on the canon rebel kit as well which is about 1200 bucks canadian, but i havent decided on what to buy, is it necessary to own a camera of this value for a beginner or are there other choices? because for the common consumer digi cams, cant fit lenses on them. and i dont want to just get a normal digi cam, it defeats the purpose, how's nikkon 8800 and how's canon rebel kit, what does the high sensor resolution mean? when it says it senses 8 meg, does it mean the resolution is 8 meg, cus there are some cameras that say, the sensory is 8 meg and some says the resolution is 8 meg.

In terms of photo quality, sensor (CCD or CMOS) size is far more important than just resolution.

Nikon 8800: 17x11 mm
Canon XT: 22.7x15.1 mm
D70s: 23.7x15.6 mm

With 6M resolution, you can easily print 8x10" or even poster size. This should satisfy your common needs.

If you think you are going to be SERIOUS, start from D-SLR. If not, buy a point and shoot. As Sean DX said, in the end, you would think pro-consumer camera is wasting your $$$.

In case of short of budget, to start with a D-SLR kit is a good thought. How ever, I suggest you go with D70s kit. The kit lens is REALLY worth it. 18mm-70mm is good enough for almost situations. After a year photo shooting, you can decide which way to go: love shooting birds? Buy a good telezoom; love scenic photos? Buy a good wide angle, and filters, and good tripod; love portrait? Buy a good prime lens.

End of the day, it is all about lenses. And whose lens's flaver you love, Canon or Nikon.

If you perfer new, get a Canon 350D body and buy a decent used lens.
If budget is an issue, get a Canon 300D or Nikon D70, and again a decent used lens. You should be able to easily get them from internet. For a beginner, they are great.
If you are afraid making bad decisions on lenses, 阿瓜 has given you a good answer.

only one comment! buying a decent lens is also kind of high utilization of your camera body. I regret not buying a $2000 lens at the very very beginning!

We all know the importance of having a decent lens. however, as a beginner, he is not yet addicted to photography. You should be easy on him. :-D He may have been scared off by your comment!

The reality is, there is a money issue everywhere. I assume he does not need as much cocaine as we do to stay alive. :-D

for Canon:
start with a 350D(rebel XT) with a lens like 28-135 USM IS(I am selling one BTW. )
The 17-85 is also a good choice, but if later you wanna use film body, then it's not compatible.

for nikon:
start with a D70 with kit lens. In that way, you can first try it out, and then make your
second move. The kit lens is not bad for the price anyway.

Talking about drug: have a look of this lens. Priced around US$4k, go figure. It is THE wide angle lens to be used on a full frame DSLR to achieve corner to corner sharpness (1Ds/MK II).

i still dont understand the difference between the cameras, as some ppl said, the lenses are important, some can fit on the film body's and some can only be fitted on digital bodies, i think i would prefer a digital camera as suggested by 阿搜，and i dont know about the lense, and for lenses, is nikkon better or is canon better? and can they interchange with each other,

i think i'm going to purchase eithr D70 or the canon rebel, D 70 has a lense that's about 500? is that lens good for now? or should i get some other lens, cus i barely know anything about photography, sorry guys
