Push factors are things that make them want to leave the countryside – like a lack of jobs, no money, poor services etc… - Pull factors are things that make them want to come to the city – like good services (hospitals, schools, transportation), jobs and social needs (entertainment, other family/friends, modern technology) - In the developed countries (west), urbanization has already been happening for a long time, and most people live in cities. - In poorer countries, where most people are farmers, urbanization is happening right now, with farmers moving into the urban centers. GOOD - Big cities can provide more job opportunities and be able to pay people who may not have very useful skills. (like working in a factory). This allows some poorer people to have better lives. - Cities offer better services than the countryside. Hospitals are closer, as are schools and markets. (if someone gets sick, they don’t have to travel 2 hours). Cities actually attract better doctors and teachers as well, so the quality is better. - News, information and technology are spread more quickly to cities. (if you have cancer and a new medicine is made, you might not even know about it until its too late if you are in the countryside) - It is easier to use your political power when you are in the city since government is there. This means if you want the government to change something, or want anything done politically, it is easier to get your voice heard. In the countryside it is hard to have an effect on politics. - It is easier for the government to take care of a population if they are all in one space. - Major companies usually prefer big cities, which can help a country’s economy.
