If you open the RESP account in the bank, you can choose individual RESP or family RESP. They are both self-directed RESP account and you decide what mutual fund, stock, bonds, ...etc. to invest. You can contribute money to this RRSP plan whenever you want...

There is another type of RESP account. i.e. Group RESP a/c. It usually requires you to invest certain amount of money every year.

怎样投资这笔钱?
- some people like to invest in index funds.
- others like to invest in blue-chip stocks such as Johnson & Johnson or other big and stable corporations.
- bonds (I don't know when it is a good time to buy and sell bonds though)

先把楼上推荐的小册子读一读，再找一家你熟悉的大银行，最好找个离家近的BRANCH，打电话约一下开一个RESP户头，银行会很乐于做这件事的。
开户的时候填一堆表，评估一下你的投资意愿和风险承受力，根据结果，银行的业务员会推荐一些投资组合，当然你也可以自己选。这个过程很简单。
个人观点，千万不要看着中文报纸上的广告找那些卖GROUP RESP的。回报偏低不说，各种明的暗的收费层出不穷，目的只有一个，尽可能多的吞掉你的投资。这样的事以前在这个论坛上讨论过不少了。
说到银行，我只用过TD和SCOTIA BANK。回报差不多。更喜欢用TD，因为他们的网站搞的好一些，操作方便。
