Hydro Rates Going Up In Ottawa
Bob Perreault
Tuesday, January 18, 2005 Starting April 1st, you'll be paying more for hydro. Hydro Ottawa has applied to increase electricity rates by 3.6 %. The utility wants to use the extra cash to teach us how to save energy, communications strategies as well as energy conservation pilot projects. The increase would bring in more than nine million dollars a year. It would cost the average Ottawa homeowner about $2.50 a month. http://www.cfra.com/headlines/index.asp?cat=1&nid=23756 |

Ottawa Among the Highest Taxed Cities in Canada
Josh Pringle Tuesday, January 18, 2005 The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is raising red flags about the taxes Ottawa residents are paying. The City of Ottawa has proposed a 4.4 per cent property tax increase for 2005, Hydro rates are set to go up $2.50 a month in April and residents are paying more for health care and tobacco. The C-T-F says tax rates have increased an average of 8.2 per cent in Ottawa since 2002 and Bruce Winchester says the higher taxes will mean residents will spend less on other things. A recent study by the City of Edmonton put Ottawa as the third most expensive city to live when property taxes, school taxes and utilities are considered. While the average homeowner in Canada's top 24 cities pays 36 hundred dollars per year in property taxes -- Ottawa residents pay four thousand, 200 dollars. http://www.cfra.com/headlines/index.asp?cat=1&nid=23775 |
