=========================================================== Chinese fans snap up Becks goodies Tuesday, August 5, 2003 Posted: 0542 GMT ( 1:42 PM HKT) The Beckham phenomenon has penetrated deep into China. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Story Tools -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- China's love affair with international soccer star David Beckham may have temporarily cooled now his new club Real Madrid have taken their pre-season tour to Japan, but a couple of Chinese fans continue to live, eat and even sleep for their hero. At a charity auction in Beijing on Sunday -- just hours after the Spanish club left after their one-match tour -- one die-hard fan shelled out 2,800 yuan ($338) for the pajamas, slippers, pillowcases, bath robe and towels from the suite Beckham occupied at a luxury hotel. After the hammer fell on the winning bid for the items -- advertised as "still carrying Beckham's sweaty stench" -- the fan leapt in excitement, the Beijing Morning Post said on Monday. The Beijing Times said the unidentified fan bought the souvenirs for his daughter. Another fan of the English soccer star -- one of the game's biggest draw cards and known around the football-playing world -- paid 3,800 yuan ($459) for the right to stay in Beckham's room. It was unclear whether the room had first been cleaned. The charity auction raised over 157,100 yuan ($18,979) for children of nurses and doctors who died battling Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the flu-like virus that has killed more than 340 people and infected thousands more in China alone this year. Beckham made his much-anticipated debut for Real in the Spanish club's 4-0 victory over a select squad of Chinese players on Saturday. It was the first major international sporting event to be held in Beijing since the World Health Organization lifted a SARS travel warning on the country. |
