Canadian citizens or permanent residents are eligible to bring to Canada their parents by sponsoring them (as specified by the Canadian Immigration and Citizenship Website ).

There are two stages in the parental sponsorship application process.

The first stage consists of the sponsorship approval process, which takes place at CPC, Mississauga, Canada. The second stage commences upon sponsorship approval, wherein the application is sent to the applicants native country. Processing times in the respective native countries will vary.

Unfortunately the processing of sponsorship files has virtually stopped at the first stage of approval, despite the fact that all sponsors paid their processing and visa fees in advance as they were told this would expedite the process. For most people, these fees were paid since June of 2003 and they have not yet heard anything from immigration. This still does not take into consideration the processing times in applicants native countries.

The current situation, with respect to processing times, is cause for worry as immigration constantly increases processing times by 1-2 months each month.

As at October 15, 2003 the family class application sponsorship processing time was 6 months (click here to see times as at October 15, 2003), currently the processing times have grown to 19 - 20 months and still grows (click here to see current processing time).

Quotas for parents coming into Canada has been drastically reduced!!! In the year 2005 the quota has been set to: 5,500- 6,800 people as compared to 2004 where quotas were: 10,233 and in 2003: 19,376. (click here to see current quotas)

This is a contravention of the right to family reunification in accordance with section 3(1.d) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of Canada.

As per the current situation and due to the application backlog, it will take decades before current parental applicants will be given entry into Canada.

With all of this in mind "Sponsor Your Parents" has written a petition to the House of Commons in order that this issue may be addressed.
