今早，一个同事说，上个星期收到Revenue Canada的信，要她丈夫退还1994多拿的EI,因为他们查到他丈夫护照上当时有出境纪录。同事花了很久才想起当时是出席一个会议当天美国来回。为此，他们被迫退还一天的钱，外加近10年的利息，大约$106。

So what? Sounds like it's quite trivial. But as it's a lawful society, I feel it's better this way. As for your friend, it's one day, but they may try to catch someone who has been absent for quite a while but still collecting EI, which is your and my tax money.

我开会的时候被告知任何离境行为都一定要汇报，如果HRDC认为你是合理的，就可以，否则就会停发你的EI，无论是多少天。

Yes, you are right.Those are ours tax money. But you know, they paid unemployeement insurance already when they were working. And they were eligible to get the money with 4 hours/day on job seeking. Please still think about it, if the government spend your Tax, even more than that to hire someone to review all your income, tax, benifit 5 years, 10 years ago?

Please still think about it, if the government spend your Tax, even more than that to hire someone to review all your income, tax, benifit 5 years, 10 years ago?

What if their mistake wasn't this trivial and was intentional? Do you want it to go unpunished? From what I understand, it is either random checking or your current tax return behavior triggered it.

I understood what you said, everybody should be punished if they were against the law. But it is not case I am talking about here. I am saying, they might review the record within a certain period. Don't you think over it is a quite bit longer for 5 years ago. If they always keep any eye on those over 5 years history, Why don't you think they waste your money?
From my opinion, if sb keep in mind on saving, then they don't have enought space to think about making money. And if they don't have enough time to review it at those period why they charge you the interest for the re-adjustment. Do you know how is the interest rate of it? And do they give you the refund with interest?

Hey guys, just try to make it clear and strict, EI is not TAX...

EI is different than tax. EI money is collected and managed under a different set of laws than tax laws.

They are similar but they have fundamental disparity.

而且你不知道全部情况, 也许那个同事以前在其它地方引起税务局的怀疑哩?

加拿大这点倒是对的，你认为不合理的都可以上诉，无论大小！我现在只要一看到Statement有疑问的地方，我就打电话！
不过，我觉得不象是别人搞错，我自己就在财务部里上班，同事又是做工资和T4之类的，这种事情一向是很清楚的！
