Hyundai, the Korean carmaker, has gained top marks among non-luxury carmakers in JD Power and Associates' latest annual survey of north American vehicle quality and design. The Hyundai Tucson took the top spot in the compact SUV segment in the latest J.D. Power and Associates initial quality study.

Hyundai ranked third lowest overall in number of reported defect and design problems, behind Porsche and Toyota's luxury Lexus brand. Lexus had held the top spot since 2001.The JD Power survey, considered one of the most authoritative in the motor industry, is based on new vehicle quality after 90 days of ownership. It has been expanded this year with more emphasis on design defects, such as computerised seats that are difficult to operate and voice activation systems that do not recognise commands.

The survey's rankings are a disappointment for General Motors at a time when the world's biggest carmaker is trying to put out the message that perceptions of its vehicles' quality lag reality.

GM's luxury Cadillac brand ranks seventh, behind Toyota and Honda, while Saturn, Pontiac, Buick and Saab vehicles are all below average.

On the other hand, the GMC brand, associated with rugged pick-up trucks and sport-utility vehicles, scored third lowest in design defects, behind only Porsche and Hyundai.

Hyundai has made steady progress in overcoming quality problems that bedevilled its entry into the north American market in the mid-1980s. Consumer Reports magazine last year ranked the Hyundai Sonata mid-size saloon the most reliable car in the US.

Land Rover, one of Ford's luxury brands, came last in the JD Power survey after several years of coming close to the bottom, raising the threat to the future of its Solihull factory in the British Midlands.

Ford has warned that the factory - currently Land Rover's only plant - will lose production if it cannot match quality levels of sister marque Jaguar by next year. The company said its poor showing was due to software defects during the launch of the new Range Rover and its improvement plan was "on track".

Volkswagen ranked third last in the survey, ahead of Isuzu and Land Rover. The German carmaker last week recalled 362,000 Jetta and New Beetle cars in the US due to a brake-light problem caused by improper installation during a previous recall. BMW also scored poorly.

Explaining the decision to include separate rankings for design defects in this year's survey, Joe Ivers, JD Power's director of quality research, said that "new vehicles today are often packed with new technologies that unfortunately can be complicated and frustrating for the average consumer. In the eyes of consumers, design flaws can have as much of an impact on their perceptions of quality as a defect."

Actually I bought one Tucson 2006 this April. It is excellent! When we were shopping around, we were impressed by this very cute SUV. We campared Ford escape, Satun Vue, Mazda Tribute, and the compact SUV from BMD, Luxs, Honda, Toyota, then we chose the best Four of them and test drived all of them. Hyundai Tucson is the best from drive experience and its functional design.

From the design point of view, Tucson is the best, and it compromise every aspects of the driver and passangers, you can go to campare their internal design and also the design under the hook (engine). It looks cute and beautiful. I have a friend bought one Tucson 2005 and told me there were no problem at all till today.

When we decided to buy it, the ONLY concern was their bad market image and bad reputation in the past, they used to be low quality. They said it was changed since long time, and their quality is very good now, also:

1. they give 5YEAR WARRANTY (the others are all THREE year warranty!) and least expensive compare with others.
2. its isurance is lower too (because it already got 5 star safty rating from US at that time)

So, we bought one and found out it was good! And yesterayy, we heard the news that Hyundai won this years quality rating, for us it is not a surprise, we knew at that time it would be the best!

So, go to their dealer and test drive it and compare with others you will see....

Thanks for your info. That is impressive. Our concern is the roll-over rate in the accidents and Fuel Economy. Can you share any experience?

2. Fule economy, real experience: 2006 Tucson 4 clinder, automatic, (2.0L)City 11L/100 KM, City and Highway: 10L/km. It is not bad for a SUV. I used to drive a new Honda Civic (1.8L)for 4 years which is the most fule efficient car as all say, it's around 10L/100km in the city. City and Highway around 9.5L/100KM. 两辆车都开过，当然V6的更强大一些，不过对城市内用车没有什么太大的用处，除非飚车；所以实际上如果不打开前盖去检查的话，正常驾驶基本上觉不出什么区别。
