OTTAWA — A massive and much-anticipated outlet mall northwest of Scotiabank Place got approval from city council’s planning committee Tuesday morning.
The project, led by the American developer Tanger Outlet Centers, is to use 25 hectares of land across Highway 417 from the arena. Besides a complex of retail stores, the plans feature a 200-room hotel and multiple restaurants, though they are to come after the shops.
The mall complex is supposed to be pedestrian-friendly, with sidewalk-type walkways that are partly sheltered from the elements. The idea is clearly that shoppers will drive there and then leave their cars while they shop — unlike at a typical box-store complex where visitors might have to drive from store to store.
With unanimous approval from the planning committee, final sign-off from full city council on Wednesday is practically a certainty.
