If you walk through the Jeanne d’Arc Court in the ByWard Market, chances are you will see a tourist posing with the famous Dancing Bear sculpture by Pauta Saila.
Created in 1999, the Dancing Bear is the first public art piece by an artist from Nunavut to be placed in Ottawa. The artist, who grew up on Baffin Island and began carving in the 1950s to supplement his livelihood as a hunter, is known for his powerful, somewhat abstract dancing bears.
The piece is one of many located in municipal buildings, open spaces, pedestrian corridors and roadways across the city.
