In her first long course world championship meet at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, Franklin won a total of five medals, three gold, one silver, and one bronze.

For her performance at these championships, she won the Female Athlete of the Year, Female Race of the Year (200-meter backstroke), and the Relay Performance of the Year (4×100-meter medley relay) Award at the eight annual Golden Goggle Awards.[26] She was also named the best female swimmer for 2011 by FINA Aquatics World Magazine.[

and she has her own story unbelievable to others:

... [H]er parents were told if they wanted to see their daughter do well they had to get out of Denver and training in a 25-metre pool. Best to go to California or Florida.

"We got a lot of pressure to move out of Colorado," said Dick Franklin, who settled his family in Denver when he worked for Head skiing and tennis. "Friends and experts were saying, 'You're making a mistake hanging around a place with no 50-metre pools with a coach in his 20s [Todd Schmitz of the Colorado Stars] who has never even met an Olympic swimmer let alone coached one.' "

But Missy Franklin wanted to stay, so she did, and her 10 years of work with Schmitz has put her among the best swimmers in the world.
