MONTREAL — The independence-seeking Parti Quebecois has been elected and was on the doorstep of a majority government on Tuesday, bringing an end to a nine-year era of tranquility on the unity front.
The PQ won or was leading in nearly 60 ridings, just short of the 63 needed for a majority in the 125-seat legislature.
But the results were prelimary and a number of ridings were too close to call. The tiny left-wing, pro-independence Quebec solidaire party led in two ridings and could wind up with the balance of power.
