Fuel consumption error leads Hyundai, Kia to issue credit cards to compensate customers

Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. and Kia Canada Inc. said they were taking t哦哦u he extraordinary step to correct the fuel consumption rating on roughly 172,000 vehicles sold in Canada, and will be issuing special credit cards to their customers to compensate them for the error.

The program is part of a broader initiative impacting 900,000 vehicles in the United States as well.

The South Korean automakers said the discrepancy was due to a procedural error during joint testing that led to incorrect fuel consumptions ratings on several of their vehicles sold between 2010 and 2012, including the popular Elantra, Accent, Tuscan, Santa Fe, Sorento, and Optima.

The companies said the average Hyundai/Kia fleet fuel consumption would increase for the 2013 model year by 0.3 litres per 100 kms.

The amount of compensation paid to customers will be based on a formula based how many kilometres driven on their vehicle and regional fuel prices, the companies said.

Chad Heard, a spokesman for Hyundai Auto Canada, said for a customer living in Toronto who paid an average of $1.29 a litre and drove 20,000 in their vehicle, they could expect approximately $85 to $95 annually, plus 15% in additional compensation for the inconvenience of the fuel consumption rate change.

The credit cards will be topped up every year for current owners for the duration of their ownership of the vehicle, the companies said.

The error only came to light after a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency audit of the vehicles.

The mileage on most vehicle labels will be reduced by one to two miles per gallon, and the largest adjustment will be six miles per gallon highway for the Kia Soul, the EPA said.

“I sincerely apologize to all affected Hyundai and Kia customers, and I regret these errors occurred,” said Dr. W. C. Yang, Hyundai/Kia research and development chief technology officer, in a statement. “Following up on the EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) audit results, we have taken immediate action to make the necessary rating changes and process corrections.”

The U.S. EPA certification is accepted by Environment Canada for auto imports into Canada.
