Why I Raise My Children Without God

My thought is people do not have a religious belief should respect the one that has, and it works that other way around as well. It seems to a topic and issue that has been discussed over and over, and Christianity seems to be the one that always get picked on. Anybody has a problem with Buddhism, Taoism, or Hinduism?
Many questions have been raised in the article. To me, the writer has little knowledge about Christianity, such as why God is unfair and not taking care of the innocent one. You need to take a deep dive.. Indeed, as a believer, we are predestined but with options to change our path. God wanted us to serve him with our own will, and the disciples are sharing the gospels because they truly care about their families and friends. Don't cherry picking.

First of all, shame on anyone who would tag this article as inappropriate. It represents at the very least an opportunity to share your faith and help someone understand the deep issues of life. I know that the writer seems very settled in her views, but wouldn’t we all like to hear some good news about someone who had the power to help us in our darkest times? As long as we draw breath we can learn something new and change our mind.

The writer’s letter is well-spoken, organized and sincere, but not at all unique. These issues have been raised time and again for millennia. People frequently pass judgment on God or deny his existence altogether without knowing the whole story. Often the offended blame God for the evil in the world, or in pain and frustration give up trying to understand. But the answers are all there in the Book if you will read it with your heart instead of a critical eye.

The first book of the Bible tells us that God did not set up the world as it is now. It was corrupted. God gave dominion of the earth to man, but in a moment of doubt and disobedience to his father, Adam sinned and gave dominion of the earth to Satan. You see, God wanted (and still wants) the same thing that all of us want, a family. He put that desire into us so that in moments of lucid tranquility we might understand him. But, to be a good and just Father, He had to give us a choice of whether to listen to him and obey, or to ignore him and go our own way.

Everyone, even atheists, in moments of shock or dire emergency will unwittingly shout, “Oh GOD!” Doesn’t that tell you something? No animal, except one, on the face of the earth worships anything; only the animal into which God breathed “the breath of life.” People groups all over the world and throughout history have had a deep-seated need to worship something or make up stories to explain the unexplainable. Animals don’t do that –only people. When things beyond our control threaten us, we either blame God or thank Him that no one was killed or that things weren’t worse. Why? We do this because in each of us is the “breath of life” –That intangible thing that makes us “a living soul.” –It is that capacity to know God that goes unfulfilled and unnoticed until we have our brush with mortality.

I characterized Him as a Father. That is what Jesus calls Him in the New Testament, repeatedly. But we have, in a sense, run away from home. He can’t (or rather chooses not to) impose His help on us unless we come home and ask Him to. And He wants to help us, but if He just swept away the effects and consequences of our actions like a genie in a bottle, then that is exactly the way we would treat him, like our wizard on call. –And He is not a wizard; He is the creator of the universe. –OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN. We must come to Him on His terms or not at all.

When God warned Adam & Eve about the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, He told them, “In the day that you sin, you shall surely die.” This stern curse was meant to protect them from allowing Satan to beguile them but they chose to believe Satan anyway, which got them kicked out of the Garden. So, out of love for His children He did this: With great effort and at great expense, He made a way for us to come back to a right relationship with Him. By the same mechanism which Adam & Eve used to lose their standing with Him, a choice, we can reverse the effects of the curse (at least in our own life). By choosing to believe and obey Him; by putting aside our doubts and trusting Him, we can put ourselves back into His hands.

The way He chose to make this available to us was to break the curse at His own expense; He became human, lived a sinless life and then died anyway. This He did to pay the price for our wandering and get our attention.
So, we can continue to blame God for something that is actually our fault (collectively), or we can undo the fall by believing in Him and obeying our good Father.

Many children grow up and realize the wisdom of their parents’ actions; many remain in their ignorance and kick and squeal. It’s your choice.

其实,如果没有基督教,这些人也会互斗和自斗不止。有了基督教,大家有了个共同的“敌人”,倒显得“团结一心”了。

不过这没有关系。主耶稣道成肉身,岂不是令本来敌对的彼多拉和希律王“在那天成为朋友”?主耶稣把神完全的圣洁、完全的荣光、完全的爱、完全的拯救彰显给人类,岂不是被人嫌弃、污蔑、逮捕、鞭打、羞辱、审判、最后被残忍地钉死在十字架上?

无罪的主耶稣被当作罪人钉死在十字架上,不正是因此而赐给了人类脱离罪恶走向永生的道路?人类不正是因此而开启了一个全新的纪元?

更切身一点,2000多年后CFC上热爱基督和热衷于攻击基督教的们不才有了基督教国家可以移民?:)

To an atheist like myself, the question " Why I raise my children without god" is in some way an invalid proposition. God does not exist regardless you thinking you raise your kids with "God" or without and regardless how much circumstantial arguments you can come up with. There is simply no such a thing as God as there is simply no "the Great Invisible Pink Unicorn".

On the microscopic level, I suppose the god here in this thread refers to the man-made concept - the christian god. Here's some excerpts taken from the bible about relationships between family members and how family should be run. Interpret them at your own will. ( i know how to cut/paste from your book too)

为甚么旧约有些诗篇却咒诅仇敌呢?

不可咒诅

  圣经教导我们不可咒诅别人(罗一二14;雅三9-10)。上帝是圣洁和公义的,祂辨别善恶、赏罚分明,祂所行的都正直公平。祂赐给人的恩典,是人不配得的;祂发出的咒诅,却是人应受的惩罚;但是,人不可发出咒诅。耶稣基督的救赎带给世人赦罪之恩,使咒诅转为祝福。认识基督的人理应凡事按照福音而行:只要祝福,不可咒诅。圣经又教导我们不可为了私人的仇怨而报复(罗一二19)。我们要彼此宽恕、相爱,不可报仇,因为伸冤在上帝,祂必报应。

咒诅的诗篇
  旧约中有些诗篇称为「咒诅的诗篇」(imprecatory psalms),包括诗篇第五十五、五十九、六十九、七十九、一○九、一三七篇。这些诗篇都是诗人向上帝的呼求和哀声,恳求上帝介入当时的景况,惩罚仇敌和恶人,拯救诗人或上帝的子民。我们读其中一些经文的时候,会感到不安和困惑。例如:「愿死亡忽然临到他们!愿他们活活的下入阴间!」(诗五五15)「愿他的年日短少!愿别人得他的职分!愿他的儿女为孤儿,他的妻子为寡妇!愿他的儿女漂流讨饭,从他们荒凉之处出来求食!」(诗一○九8-10)又如:「将要被灭的巴比伦城啊,报复你像你待我们的,那人便为有福!拿你的婴孩摔在磐石上的,那人便为有福!」(诗一三七8-9)

咒诅的处境及用语
  这些诗篇的作者主要是大卫(诗五五、五九、六九、一○九篇),另外是亚萨(诗七九篇)及被掳时期的不知名者(诗一三七篇)。我们首先要注意,有关的经文不涉及私人的恩怨和报复。圣经所描述的大卫,不是这样的人。虽然他遭扫罗追杀,被多益告密,儿子押沙龙叛变,受示每咒骂等,撒母耳记却从没有提及他怀恨在心而加以报复,可见大卫不是恶毒的人。

  诗篇的祷告都是针对那些攻击耶和华和祂的受膏者的敌人、恶人、诡诈人。他们所行的尽是欺压、逼迫、强暴、吞灭、喜爱流人血、邪恶、罪孽等不义之事。在敌人的蹂躏和苦待之下,诗人个人和代表一群受害者在上帝面前唉哼哀诉,求上帝为他们伸张正义,主持公道,向恶人施行审判,以其人之道还治其人之身,使他们自食恶果,并求上帝救拔祂的子民脱离他们的手。读这些诗篇时,须了解当日的背景。

  诗篇中的咒诅出自面临绝境之人的口,用词固然是痛苦的和发泄怒气的,表现了无奈和无助;但那同时是修词上的夸张手法,我们不必按字面去了解。诗中的一些祈愿,反映了仇敌加在别人身上的苦害,诗人希望那些事转过来也发生在仇敌的身上,让他们亲自体会自己所造成的灾祸。

  此外,有一些用词则用了比喻或象征的手法。诗中针对巴比伦说:「拿你的婴孩摔在磐石上的,那人便为有福!」那听起来非常残忍,令人难以接受。事实上,杀害妇孺是古代战争中常见的罪行,征服者(如亚述、巴比伦)便常对不肯降服的小国施以这种惩罚。不过,巴比伦并没有磐石或峭壁,而旧约学者华德凯瑟(Walter Kaiser)指出,「婴孩」一词可指年幼或已长大的孩童,其重点不在于年龄的大小,而是在于父子的关系。诗人以此作比喻,意思是说先祖的罪行在后代中重复出现,这些后人(婴孩)必面临灭绝的命运,这就成了巴比伦的写照。

  诗篇中的咒诅,是旧约信徒对伤害他们的仇敌所作出之回应。我们须体会作者的心境和感受,理解他们激动的因由。倘若我们处身其间,也许会做相似的事。但是在上帝渐进的启示过程中,我们新约时代的信徒比起旧约时代的子民,更多明白上帝的心意,知道上帝至终必要审判罪恶,为祂的选民伸冤(路一八7-8)。基督的十字架带来了宽恕和赦罪。这两方面的真理,影响并改变了我们对不公义之事及仇敌的态度。我们若肯定并坚守这样的信念,就不会发出咒诅,只会祝福了。
