One employee who contacted OBJ said more than 200 local employees had been laid off. That claim was not immediately verifiable because IBM “does not publicly discuss details of its staffing plans,” said Ottawa-based spokesperson Carrie Bendzsa.
“IBM is constantly rebalancing its workforce. That means reducing in some areas and hiring in others,” she said in a voicemail message.
While the company refuses to say how many local people it employs, IBM has previously regarded itself as the largest private-sector employer in the National Capital Region.
Lee Conrad, the New York-based co-ordinator of IBM employees’ organization Alliance@IBM / CWA Local 1701 said he is receiving reports of layoffs across Canada and the U.S. as well as in Denmark, Germany, France and Italy.
“We don’t have any numbers yet. The job cuts will be happening all day today,” he said in a telephone interview.
“It appears to be just about every division in IBM right now.”
Another Ottawa-based IBM employee told OBJ that workers in the former Cognos division were also affected.
