OTTAWA — Unemployment in the national capital rose to 6.7 per cent in July, a 0.4-per-cent jump from June and the highest since October, 2010, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
The jump was mainly due to new entrants into the area’s labour force, the agency said. Employment fell only marginally to 691,400 jobs.
Public administration jobs in the region were 150,600, down just 1,000 from June, but well off the peak of 177,300 February, 2011.
High-tech employment was steady at 50,400 in July versus 50,300 in June, well up from the December low of 40,200, but short October, 2007’s high of 70,400.
Nationally, Canada unexpectedly lost 39,400 jobs in July, pushing the country’s unemployment rate to 7.2 per cent.
Total public sector employment declined by 74,000, the agency said, while employment you youth aged 15-24 was off by 45,600.
The construction section shed 6,100 jobs.
On the positive side, manufacturing jobs, which declined in June, were up 13,500 in July.
