Ottawa – The monthly cost of eating healthy for a family of four in Ottawa is estimated to be $789, leaving many families struggling to put nutritious food on the table. Ottawa Public Health’s (OPH) Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL) strategy has identified food access as an important issue to be addressed as part of its three-year strategy.
Each year, OPH conducts the Nutritious Food Basket Survey. The survey tool is used to monitor the cost of basic healthy eating in Ottawa. This year, the monthly cost of eating healthy has increased by $44 from the 2012 monthly cost of $745. As a result, low-income households may struggle to buy sufficient nutritious food for their families.
"This year’s results show that it is getting more difficult for many families to buy nutritious food," said Councillor Diane Holmes, Chair of the Board of Health. "With the cost of buying healthy food continuing to climb, it’s more important than ever to help individuals and families with programs and supports that make eating healthy more affordable and accessible."
OPH supports programs such as the Good Food Markets and innovative projects from Ottawa Food Policy Council, and Hidden Harvest. These initiatives will be showcased this evening at the Community Development Framework’s annual learning forum for residents and service providers at the Confederation Education Centre at 6:30 p.m. The Come and Get It! Connecting Neighbourhoods with Food forum will share successes about projects taking place in neighbourhoods and explore ways to improve access to nutritious food in communities.
“It’s important for all Ottawa residents to have access to healthy and affordable food,” said Catherine Dubois, executive director of the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre. "Tonight’s forum will give the opportunity for residents and service providers to share how they are working to make nutritious food more available in all neighbourhoods, whether it be through community gardens, collective kitchens or Good Food Markets."
