What to do in Ottawa on Remembrance Day.
Put out the garbage. Collection is on normal schedule.
Take the bus. OC Transpo is on normal schedule. However, the sales and information centres will be closed, except for the Rideau Centre office, which will be open from 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. At 11 a.m., where safe, bus drivers will pull over for two minutes of silence, with The Last Post and Reveille being played over the loud speaker.
Don’t shop until the afternoon. Most retail stores are required to remain closed until 12:30 p.m. Exceptions include convenience stores, gas stations and some pharmacies.
Take a banking holiday. Your banker certainly will; all banks are closed.
Don’t try to fight city hall. The building and the city’s client service centres will be closed. Ottawa Public Library branches will also be closed for the day, as will city-operated childcare centres. Same with the city’s provincial offences court. But don’t think the city has completely lost interest in you for the day: all parking regulations and restrictions will be in force.
Wait, here’s something the city will actually do for you on Remembrance Day: pools, arenas and fitness centres will be open, with regular fitness schedules.
Take in a parade. In addition to the ceremony at the National War Memorial, there are parades and ceremonies taking place at Royal Canadian Legion buildings in: Bells Corners; Eastview/Vanier; Kanata; Manotick/South Carleton; Orléans; Osgoode, Richmond; Stittsville; Strathcona; West Carleton; Westboro; as well as the Vars Cenotaph and the Navan Cenotaph.
