A large portion of the Rideau Canal Skateway will officially open for the winter season at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Capital Commission.

The skateway will open for its 44th season on a 3.2-kilometre section between the Bank Street Bridge and Concord Street (near Colonel By Drive and Main Street).

It is the first time skaters have been able to take to the ice before the New Year since Dec. 28, 2004.

The NCC will mark the occasion at 2:15 p.m., with a ceremonial raising of the first green flag at the Fifth Avenue rest station.
