Notice of Natural Gas Venting in Ottawa
February 6, 2014

Enbridge Gas Distribution will be venting natural gas in the City of Ottawa for approximately one to two hours, beginning at around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday February 6, 2014. Residents may notice the smell of rotten eggs or hear a loud sound as natural gas is released in a safe and controlled manner.

Individuals near the following five locations are most likely to smell or hear the venting of natural gas:

  • Greenbank Road at West Hunt Club
  • Eagleson Road at Hope Side
  • Flewellyn at Shea Road
  • Flewellyn at Huntley Road
  • Enbridge’s Richmond Gate Station at 6783 Fallowfield Road
The situation is safe – but individuals may find the smell or sound unpleasant. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Controlled venting of natural gas is a standard practice for pipeline construction, maintenance and repair. This work is being conducted to safely energize a new 19-kilometre, 24-inch natural gas pipeline in the City of Ottawa.

Although controlled venting is safe, Enbridge Gas Distribution will still be responding to all emergency calls using the same process as always. If residents are concerned there may be a gas leak in their vicinity, they should call 1-866-763-5427 (1-866-SMELGAS).

Please note that what you are smelling are the additives that give Natural gas a smell. These additives are not hazardous. #NaturalGasSmell

We provided advance notice of a potential smell to municipal, fire and police in the area. We believe the wind direction has played a factor in the unanticipated spread of the smell, but we are investigating all possible causes.
