Check the wall switch, it's microvolt switch meaning very little current going through, much lower than wetting current requirement for normal wall switch contacts. I changed wall switch couple times in the last 15 years for my gas fireplace. Sometimes, it may not start and sometime shuts itself off...etc. If you are handy enough, you can take the switch apart and polish the contacts to get it going again.
There should not be any gas leak, don't worry. The valve will only open when the temperature is high enough. The microvolt switch will shut it off if contact is open.
