NEW YORK (PIX11) – An explosion destroyed two residential buildings in East Harlem Wednesday morning.

The explosion happened on 116th Street and Park just after 9:30 a.m., according to officials. A four-alarm fire continues to rage at the site of the explosion.

Spanish Christian Church and Absolute Piano Repair were on the first floors of the buildings.

There are reports that people are trapped after part of the building collapsed.



The apartment building reportedly collapsed after a massive explosion.

It is unclear what caused the explosion at this time, but Con Ed was requested on rush for a gas leak.

(CNN) -- A massive explosion Wednesday injured at least 11 people and resulted in a building collapse and raging fire in Manhattan's East Harlem, authorities said.

A Con Ed spokesman Bob McGee said the utility received a call of a gas leak at 9:13 AM. The call came from a resident at one of the newer building on Park Avenue. The utility dispatched a truck two minutes later but it arrived after the explosion, the spokesman said
