Does your Fascia need Attention?

First we need to establish, what is fascia? See Figure 1. Or maybe you’ve heard it being called fascia-soffit, as these two important pieces that make up the edge of your roof (the eave). Think of it as the siding or molding behind your gutter system. To keep it simple, the fascia board caps off the rafters (roof edge) and fascia-soffit seals the side and bottom (hint the meaning “bandage”).

Fascia boards sit up under the eaves and behind the gutters on a home so they're out of the way and often ignored or forgotten. However, besides just filling in the hole under the eaves, fascia has a couple of important roles to play:
  • Fascia helps support the rain guttersthat channel rainwater away from your foundation.
  • Working in combination with the soffits, fascia is part of the attic ventilation system that helps keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, therefore save your MONEY$$ paid to Hydro Ottawa and Gas Enbridge!

[2] SOFFIT Damage & Replacement
Does your Soffit need Attention?

First we need to establish, what is soffit? See Figure 2. Technically, a soffit is the underside of any element of a building. The most common soffit is found in the area under the eaves on the exterior of the house. The soffit extends from the side of the house to the edge of the eave and closes the space beneath the eave. The soffit is more vulnerable to weather damage than any other part of the house:
  • Wet material rots, and a soffit can be repeatedly soaked by water from torn shingles, damaged or rusted flashing, ice dams, or poorly functioning gutters. This will seriously damage house and cost on homeowner to fix and repair
  • Squirrels and birds can also damage a soffit, since they like to nest in the space in the space behind soffits if they can find a point of entry.
  • Bees, hornets, and wasps do not actually damage a soffit, but when they build a nest behind a soffit, they present a problem for the homeowners.

[3] SIDING Damage & Replacement
Does your Siding need Attention?

First we need to establish, what is siding? See Figure 3. Siding is an important element to all homes. It not only gives visual appearance to the house, but it also protects the structural elements from damage. Inspecting your siding regularly is recommended to ensure a problem free environment. When you inspect your siding, be sure you keep a look out for the common damages that could occur. Homeowners would be so surprised at how much DAMAGE and $$MONEY$$ they could save by doing a simple siding inspection check each year. The quicker you catch a problem, the easier and cheaper it will be to fix. Finding common siding problems right away will make your home keep good condition and make fix and repair easier if a problem being detected in the future. The most common siding damages are:
  • Crack: Cracks in masonry walls may not be anything of concern. Usually cracks in the walls means that the house has settled. To be sure this is the only problem, place strong tape over the cracks. Keep eye on the tape for a few months and see if there is any tearing or twisting. If there is, you may have bigger issues on your plate than settling.
  • Caulk Deterioration: Caulk is a great substance for sealing cracks and windows. However, it tends to crack, dry, and deteriorate over time. Keep an eye out for this. When it happens, simply strip the old caulk from the siding and apply new. It is very cheap and extremely simple.
  • Termite or Dry Rot damage: The words termite and dry rot send shivers down the backs of homeowners. These two things can structurally ruin any house. To catch termite and dry rot damage early, regularly inspect the wood siding. Every once in a while, use a knife and probe the siding for spongy areas. Make sure to pay close attention to wood siding that is nearest to the ground. This area is usually the first area affected.
  • Mildew: Houses that are located in warm, humid climates can be the victim of mildew. Mildew is easily avoided by regularly cleaning your siding. Use clean water and a car-wash brush to scrub down the most vulnerable areas. If left untreated, mildew can cause rotting in wood.
  • Peeling Paint: Paint is not only meant for vanity. Yes, you want your house to look good, but paint also provides a protective barrier from the weather. If you see peeling paint, make sure you repaint the area as soon as the weather permits. This may mean you paint an entire wall, or simply a patch of siding.
