The City of Ottawa is spearheading the pedestrian bridge project on the Airport Parkway.
Work first began on the bridge, intended to link Hunt Club Road with the South Keys shopping centre and the Transitway, in June 2011. Primary construction was supposed to befinished that fall, with landscaping and some other work set for May 2012.
But, after initial delays pushed construction into to the spring, concrete used in the construction failed to set properly, requiring much of bridge to be torn down.
Work was suspended again in October over design concerns.
The bridge, which originally had a price tag of $7 million, is now expected to cost the city $11.65 million.
The fiasco triggered a third-party review of the project, which Mayor Jim Watson described as an “embarrassment.”
