94岁老妇4年前雇用一名女佣照顾自己的起居生活，没想到竟然引狼入室。怀疑女佣获雇主签授权书后，不但全家搬进老妇家中，骗光老妇的毕生积蓄及珠宝家具，更把老妇赶入一间卧室形同拘禁。幸有长期上门为老妇送药的人员发现问题向药剂师报告，由该名华裔药剂师代为报警。女佣及其丈夫涉嫌虐老、诈骗等行为被拘捕。

多伦多警方53分局探员Valerie Dahan透露，被捕者是受害人的32岁女佣及其38岁丈夫。两人各被控行为不检、行为不检涉及财产罪名（mischief interfering with property）、盗窃、欺诈及非法居住他人房屋等罪名。案件受害人是94岁的马素（Norma Marshall），她被骗去2.5万元积蓄及家中几乎所有珠宝和家具。

「我的家具都不见了」

警方称，受害老妇约在4年前雇用女疑犯照顾自己的起居生活。女疑犯最初只负责打扫房屋，不久后主动提出帮老人煮食。此前老妇依靠专为耆老及残障人士提供送餐上门的Meals on Wheels服务计划解决三餐。

警方表示女疑犯此后很快开始介入老人的日常生活，并取得个人资料进入老人的银行户口。2014年初，她告诉受害人自己将回流至原居国葡萄牙，并邀请老妇陪伴其家人。老妇同意，并被胁迫出资给女疑犯及其家人搬家。

马素表示，令她意外的是女佣连同其丈夫及两个孩子，在几天之后与他们所有家当，一起出现在她门口，并告诉受害人他们将搬到她的家居住。受害人被迫移至单位内一间小卧室居住。「我跟这两夫妇和两个孩子生活在一起，我的家具都不见了，我再也感觉不到这是自己的家。除了我自己的卧室之外」。

一名过往十年几乎每周为受害人送药上门的工作人员Firoz Jogiat，最先发现情况可疑。他去老妇家送药时，惊奇地发现由一名陌生男子应门，并被告知他是老妇的家人。但老妇曾经向Jogiat提过她在世的亲属只有一位居住在满地可的姪儿。送药人感到情况可疑。

警方吁同类受害长者报警

一周后他再到老妇家，并要求跟受害人见面。他被带到受害人的卧室，其间感到受害人形同被拘禁。送药人与受害人交谈时，她不敢正视他的眼睛。送药人回到药房之后，与华裔药剂师殷陈少娟（Selina Chan-Ying）谈起情况，药剂师决定报警。警方收报警电话后采取行动。

警方呼吁有类似经历长者勇敢报警。受害老妇表示情感上受到创伤很不好受。钱或许可以找回来，但人老了也不需要花很多钱，反而需要有人在身边照顾。

多伦多警队保护弱势人群协调人Patricia Fleischmann表示，任何人凭藉受信任或有权威的地位、对65岁以上老人造成伤害，即构成虐待老人的行为。虐待不仅可以是身体上，也可以是情感上或是财务上，或者是对老人疏于照顾。

他指长者Marshall的遭遇是非常典型的虐老案例。一些常见的老人可能遭受虐待的迹象包括：无助感、精神压力及抑郁、不愿与他人敞开心扉交谈、恐惧感、被遗弃感及情绪激动、烦乱等。

When deliveryman Firoz Jogiat saw Norma Marshall in late March, confined to her bed in a small room in her house, he knew something was wrong.
The week before, the 94-year-old woman had not answered her door to receive her medication from Mr. Jogiat, who had delivered it to her every Wednesday for 10 years. Instead, a strange man, who said he was a family member, took her prescription.
Last Wednesday, Mr. Jogiat insisted on seeing Ms. Marshall, under the guise of needing to deliver her medication to her personally, and was escorted by the man to her room. Mr. Jogiat said Ms. Marshall wouldn’t look him in the eye when he asked her questions.
“She didn’t look at me,” Mr. Jogiat said. “She was so scared, so I knew something was wrong.”
Mr. Jogiat’s visit prompted Selina Chan-Ying, the pharmacist at the Thorncliffe-Overlea Centre Pharmasave, where Mr. Jogiat works, to call Toronto police.

Police say Ms. Marshall lost her life savings of approximately $25,000 in a scam that saw a housekeeper and her family move into Ms. Marshall’s home and sell off her possessions, including furniture and jewellery.
Vera Nunes, 32, and Luis Serpa Da Conceicao Santos, 38, of Toronto, were arrested and charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling, theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000, and mischief interfering with property.
Ms. Marshall met Ms. Nunes approximately four years ago when she was looking for a housekeeper and a friend gave her Ms. Nunes’ flyer.
The only place I felt at home was in my own bedroom
Police say Ms. Nunes started cleaning for Ms. Marshall, and then started offering to do more around the house, including cooking. Police allege she became more involved in Ms. Marshall’s life and soon received access to her bank account and finances.
Ms. Nunes told Ms. Marshall earlier this year that she and her family would be returning to Portugal, their native country, and asked if Ms. Marshall would move with them.
Ms. Marshall was then “coerced,” Det. Const. Valerie Dahan said, into giving funds to the family to help with their move.
In early March, police say, Ms. Marshall opened her front door to find Ms. Nunes and Mr. Serpa Da Conceicao Santos and their children on her doorstep, with all their belongings. They told her they would be moving into her home.
Ms. Marshall was displaced to a smaller bedroom, Det. Const. Dahan said, and “confined to that room for most of the time.”
“I didn’t really feel at home,” Ms. Marshall said. “The only place I was at home was in my own bedroom.”
Mr. Jogiat’s visit with Ms. Marshall in late March was one of a few signs that something was not right.

Ms. Chan-Ying and other pharmacy staff noticed that people who identified themselves as Ms. Marshall’s family were picking up her phone when they called to check on her, as they often do with some of their regular patients.
When pharmacy staff asked to speak to Ms. Marshall, they were told she was sleeping.
“Norma doesn’t need to sleep so much,” Ms. Chan-Ying said.
Ms. Marshall would only be able to talk on the phone when they were out of the house, Ms. Chan-Ying said.
“We called and she goes, ‘OK, I can speak for a short time now,’” said Kelly Narine, the receptionist for Ms. Marshall’s doctor. “So right away, we never get something like that. So you know something was up.”
Ms. Marshall expressed her gratitude for Ms. Chan-Ying, Mr. Jogiat and Ms. Narine in a press conference Wednesday.
“I thank them very much,” she said. “If it hadn’t been for them, this wouldn’t come about.”
Now comes the challenge of Ms. Marshall’s recovery.
“The life savings is one thing, but then what it does to you emotionally is worse,” she said. “You don’t need a lot of money when you get old…you don’t need a lot, but you do need people around you.”
