Given Enjoy's recent incident with Scotia Bank, I'd like to remind everybody to remember alway check your bills yourself. Countless mistakens have happened with the service providers in Canada, hope my experience will help others.
1. SIN
While you are anxiously waiting for 3-4 weeks for your first card in Canada--SIN card, it could eventually come with a wrong spelling. The stupid and careless mistake made by government staff who didn't bother to check again. So what happens next? You have to make a trip to HRDC, fill the form and wait for another 3 weeks, hoping this time they make it right!
2. Car Loan
With the current low interest, you feel you may as well pay off the car loan than having the money sitting in the bank. At lease you save the extra interest you pay for the car loan. So you made a lumpsum payment to pay off the loan. What happens next? To your surprise, the next monthly car loan payment still goes out of your account. Because the bank's machine is not smart enough to know the loan has been paid-off! (What computer genius they hired?!) Okay, now you called them and they promised to correct their mistakes. Instead of crediting to your bank account, they send you a cheque to the address on file, without checking with you to make sure it is the correct one. So the cheque goes nowhere? And they have to wait till the return of the first cheque before they can send you another one, even they know the cheque has NOT been cashed! When the bank gives you a loan, you pay interest from the right moment. When they take money from your account by mistake, they don't bother. Who bears the interest?
3. Bell Sympatico
I subscribed high-speed edition. As a package, I get 10 hours free dial-up monthly. But get charged if the usage time goes beyond 10 hours. Who needs that dial-up anyway! The bill came, the first month dial-up time was below 10 hours, no charge. Second month, it was 3x hours and I got charged for that extra. There is no way for me to have used that dial-up, not my family. And there is no way for me to disclose our pin! The only one who could know the pin is the service rep, believe it or not, they actually asked for your pin when you called them, not just the username! As a precausion, I changed my pin right away which stoped someone stealing my account. But I was going nowhere when I talked to Bell Sympatico, they only blamed me for letting other know my pin!
My list can go on and on, including Rogers, Bank of Montreal, CIBC, Bell telephone, Telus Mobility, Credit Card companies,Revenue Canada, etc, etc.
So do keep the gate yourself, you cannot rely on these bank staff or utility staff to do you justice. These people, like most Canadians, they don't care. They want just get over with one day's drop then they can sit in their backyard drinking Molson. Enjoy's case is rare and very unfortunate. But there could be a mistake on your bill, any minute.
Do check your bill before you put it away to collect dust.
Good luck!
