Ottawa Public Health officials have fined a Barrhaven restaurant in connection with a food poisoning incident that sickened 44 children and adults at a Chinese-language day camp in Barrhaven on July 31.
Six of the children from the Tian Tian Chinese Summer Camp were taken to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario for treatment of symptoms that included vomiting and dizziness. They were all released later the same day.
Ottawa Public Health officials said Friday that they have fined the Lotus Chinese Food Takeout, Unit 5-3780 Fallowfield Road in Barrhaven, under the provincial Health Promotion and Protection Act for “operating a food premise maintained in a manner permitting a health hazard and operating a food premise maintained adversely affecting sanitary conditions.” The charges carry a maximum fine of $600.
Investigators say a total of 44 people became ill after eating fried rice dish prepared by the restaurant on July 31. Lab tests found Bacillus cereus was in the rice and noodle dishes prepared by the restaurant. It is a type of bacteria that produces gastroenteritis. Although the bacteria was in both dishes, public health officials said there was enough of it in the rice dish to make people sick.
As part of its investigation, health officials tested three restaurants that had catered to the camp during the week, only the Lotus Chinese Food Takeout was found not to be compliant with food safety regulations.
