Ottawa police said their divers recovered a body from the Ottawa River near Bate Island Sunday morning.

The body, which will not be identified until next of kin are notified, was recovered after a search resumed for a missing 39-year-old man who tried to save a drowning boy near Bate Island Saturday evening.

Police would not confirm the body retrieved from the river was that of the missing man.

Two men dove into the river at about 7 p.m. Saturday to try to rescue a 12-year-old boy at the island near the Champlain Bridge. A 24-year-old man managed to save the boy, who was treated for hypothermia and then released to the care of his mother, said paramedics. The other man did not emerge from the river.

Police divers, firefighters and paramedics tried to find the missing man until darkness fell. Ottawa police said their Marine and Dive Unit resumed their search early Sunday morning.

More to come.
