The flag flying atop the Peace Tower on Sunday, when the now-familiar ensign turns 50, could soon be flapping above your cottage, adorning a wall of your basement man-cave, or outdoing your neighbour’s decorations come Canada Day. Or at least it could if you had had the foresight to put your order in years ago. For the rest of us, don’t despair: If you request a Peace Tower flag today, it should arrive in your mailbox just in time for the flag’s 100th birthday.

According to Public Works and Government Services Canada, which is responsible for the flags on Parliament Hill and gives them away for the asking, there is a 48-year waiting list for the Peace Tower flags, while those interested in obtaining one from the East or West Blocks face a shorter wait of just 34 years.

Since first giving them away in 1994 as part of its Flag Initiative, Public Works has handed out more than 8,500 Canadian flags from the Hill, enough to cover about 15 acres, or 51 Olympic swimming pools, or 40 NHL hockey rinks. Fifteen thousand Canadians are currently on the waiting list.

The Peace Tower flag, which measures 2.3 by 4.6 metres (7.5 by 15 feet), is changed on weekdays and on days when it is flown at half-mast – although not on statutory holidays or when the weather is especially poor – or roughly 250 times each year.

The four smaller flags that fly above the East and West Blocks and elsewhere on the Hill measure 1.35 by 2.7 metres, or 4.5 by 9 feet, and are changed weekly, for a total of more than 200. Each flag has a serial number, and with their flag, recipients are informed of the date or week on which it flew.

After being removed, each flag is dried, folded and stored for distribution. Any Canadian resident can request a flag, although Public Works’ protocol is to give out only one flag per person and per household. There is no charge for the flags.

Those interested in ordering a flag from Parliament Hill can do so by emailing minister@tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca.
