Nearly 200 supporters of Reach Canada, a non-profit organization that helps people with disabilities navigate the legal system, came out Wednesday to a cabaret fundraiser full of comedy, dance and music.

American stand-up Darryl Lenox, who’s visually impaired, kept the crowd in stitches as host and headliner of the show, held at the St. Elias Centre. He’s sticking around for a few more days to perform at Yuk Yuk’s on Elgin Street, through to Sunday.

Other top acts included the Propeller Dance Company, the African drum and dance group Loyal Kigabiro, and singer Maria Hawkins with musician and award-winning songwriter John MacDonald. Jazz duo Peter Liu and Peter Hum performed during the cocktail reception.

Present was Reach Canada’s honourary chair, John D. Richard, retired chief justice of Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal. Also on hand were board president Renette Sasouni and the head of the cabaret committee, lawyers James Foord and Erin McNamara.

Nearly 200 supporters of Reach Canada, a non-profit organization helping people with disabilities navigate the legal system, came out to a cabaret fundraiser full of comedy, dance and music.

It’s been almost 35 years since Reach Canada started helping disabled people get better access to justice and equality through its educational, outreach and lawyer referral services.

“When you have a legal problem, it’s the most intimidating thing in the world,” long-time Reach supporter Shereen Benzy Miller told Around Town. “It’s like having a health problem; you don’t know where to go, you don’t know who to speak to.”

Reach Canada serves as “a bridge between the people in crisis and the legal community”, she added.

Executive director Paula Agulnik, who’s been championing the cause for the past 30 years, has decided to mark her career milestone by retiring at the end of this year. She told Around Town that she’s “thrilled” about her replacement, Joanne Silkauskas. She has a background in law and social work and is bilingual to boot.

Agulnik plans to stay involved with Reach by helping to organize its 35th anniversary celebrations taking place next spring.
