Ottawa police officer responding to a call seriously hurt in crash
An Ottawa police officer responding to an emergency call was involved in a crash with a woman in Stittsville on Thursday, and both were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The two-car crash happened at Hazeldean Road and Huntmar Drive at about 9:20 a.m. as a police cruiser was actively responding to a call, according to Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, which looks into incidents involving police in Ontario that result in serious injury, sexual assault or death.
The police officer, a man in his 30s, was initially unconscious but regained consciousness and was taken to hospital with serious head injuries, paramedics said.
A 52-year-old woman driving the other car was also taken to hospital in serious condition, paramedics say. She was initially trapped and firefighters were needed to get her out of the car.
The SIU initially took charge of the investigation, but announced later Thursday that it has suspended its investigation until further notice after reviewing the woman's injuries.
Police closed Hazeldean from Johnwoods Street to Terry Fox Drive, Iber Road from Abbott street to Hazeldean and Huntmar from Hazeldean to Maple Grove Road.

Jenny Marcellus was working in a manhole near the scene of the crash when it happened, she told CBC News.
"We were in the manhole ... and all of a sudden we heard sirens, and then all we could hear was this huge bang and then the screeching of the tires. ... We came up and came running out and the cop car was there and a few other cop cars were showing up, and everyone was running around, panicked," she said.
"There was a lot of sirens before [the crash], like he was responding to an accident and had another accident, unfortunately."
