The city and OC Transpo’s largest union have reached a tentative deal on a new collective agreement early Friday.
The city’s lawyer on the bargaining team told council the city and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 279 struck a deal to renew the contract.
The union has roughly 2,300 members, predominantly drivers and mechanics. Their current four-year contract is scheduled to expire March 31.
The city is heralding the tentative agreement as proof that there’s “positive labour relations” between the two sides.
Most importantly, the proposed deal will make sure LRT launches in spring 2018 without labour strife.
Contract specifics, such as any salary increases and length of deal, won’t be released until both the union and city council vote on it.
The city tried to extend the contract last year but the union membership rejected the proposal. That led to a change in leadership at the union.
