At least one group blinked Saturday in the face of extremely frigid weather as the National Capital Commission and the CBC announced the cancellation of the the outdoor “I Heart My City” concert at Confederation Park’s Crystal Garden.

The show featuring featuring Ottawa Juno nominee Amanda Rheaume, Jim Bryson, Kalle Mattson and former Great Big Sea member Sean McCann, was to have begun at 6:30 p.m. at the Crystal Garden in Confederation Park.

But organizers tweeted in mid-afternoon that the show was off due to the weather.

Still, Ottawans showed commendable levels of hardiness in the face of temperatures that registered in the -30 range, with the windchill factored in, for most of the day.

Dozens of riders turned out at the slides of Snowflake Kingdom in Gatineau, with kids and parents favouring balaclava hoods and multiple layers of clothing.

“It’s OK, as long as you keep moving,” said Robert Ouellette of Gatineau, leading his kids for another run on the slides.

On the canal Skateway, finally opened in its full grandeur, hardy souls tried to stay in the bright sunshine and out of the wind.

Richard Shillington, for his part, braved the temperatures to man the outdoor BBQ pits as Manotick and City View curlers played indoors at a weekend-long bonspiel at the City View Curling Club.

Shillington cooked up 45 racks of ribs and other grub for the crow and says watching the crowds eat his cooking makes his day.

He admits, however, that wasn’t his first thought Saturday morning.

“I was really not looking forward to this,” he said. “This is a day for a wrap and Netflix, not staying outside cooking ribs.”

Environment Canada’s extreme cold weather warning remains in effect, with temperatures expected to hit -30 C Saturday night, with a windchill reading of -39, due to winds gusting up to 40 km/h.

Valentine’s Day Sunday is expected to be mainly sunny, with moderate winds and a high of -17 C. The windchill equivalent is expected to be about -39 in the morning and -30 in the afternoon. Sunday’s overnight low was expected to be -25 C, with a windchill of -32.

Family Day Monday should be more reasonable: A mix of sun and cloud with a forecast high of -12 C.

Ottawa Public Health’s frostbite warning remains in effect as long as the forecast is for windchill values of –35 or lower.

Frostbite warnings urge people to take precautions before going outside, such as wearing multiple layers of clothing and ensuring no skin is exposed.

Overnight Friday to Saturday Ottawa Paramedic Service treated two people for hypothermia, frostbite and “altered levels of consciousness” due to being outside in the extreme cold. In one instance, RCMP officers found a man in his 40s requiring treatment near Bank and Wellington streets; in the other, a man in his 20s was found on the canal near Carleton University by bystanders late at night and was helped by the NCC and police until paramedics arrived.

Both were taken to hospital in stable condition, but only due to quick intervention by bystanders and police officers, paramedics said.
