A thief who’s been targeting parking meters in Smiths Falls appears to have a new modus operandi.
Last October, police in the community southwest of Ottawa reported that someone was stealing meters from their posts, perhaps by shearing them off with a giant pipe-cutter like Paul Newman in the 1967 classic movie Cool Hand Luke.
On Monday, police disclosed that someone — the same thief? — employed a safecracker approach in February, drilling out locks on several meters on Market Street to gain access to the coins within.
While the crime may seem like small change — parking on a Smiths Falls street costs just 50 cents an hour and the meters accept nickels, dimes and quarters, according to the town’s website — police say the cost of repairing meters is “substantial.”
They’re hoping someone saw or heard the suspect or suspects at work. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 613-284-2274, 1-800-222-8477 or www.tipsoft.com.
