The Coleman boys have had a few small things go missing on their school bus over the years — a pair of mittens, a rain jacket — but they made up for it in spades at Saturday’s OC Transpo lost and found sale.

The boys, 12-year-old Roy and 10-year-old Leo (and their parents Bill and Christina,) made off like bandits with a baseball mitt, an assortment of ball caps, a rugby ball, an umbrella, a couple pairs of stylish sunglasses, and a 400-page hardbound biography of Genghis Khan – that last one for Roy, the history buff of the Coleman clan.

They were just a few of the hundreds of people who snaked their way through the rooms of Heartwood House, where thousands of items that turn up unclaimed in OC Transpo lost and found bins are then donated and sold at bargain basement prices in a twice-yearly fundraiser.

Moe Moloughney, Heartwood executive director, who served double-duty Saturday as the door greeter ushering in the stampede of treasure-seekers, said the fundraiser attracts between 300 and 400 people for the two-hour spree, and expects to raise around $5,000 for Heartwood, which will help offset operating costs for the 18 small charities under its umbrella.

“It’s a bargain hunter’s dream. It’s a great opportunity for people to come in and scoop up what hasn’t been claimed,” she said.

Carleton University student Liam Smedley walked out of last year’s sale with a mint condition six-foot dinosaur costume, so he returned Saturday and loaded up with three toques, a pair of mitts, a lunch bag, a solar-powered battery pack, headphones, a calculator, a USB stick and a thermos — all had on a very student-friendly budget of $23.

Moloughney — she prefers “Moe” — said around 30,000 items wind up in OC Transpo lost and found bins, and of those, only 7,000 are claimed on average each year.

There are the typical items — CDs, basketballs, winter coats, toques and gloves, stacks of discarded clothing, ball caps sunglasses.

Then there are the not-so-typical items.

“It’s always the things one would think you’d remember on a bus, somebody sadly left an excellent baseball glove behind and never claimed it,” said Moe, pointing to a washtub-sized wicker basket. “Why that ended up staying on a bus is a mystery to me.”

Most items sell from 25 cents to $5, but there are some bargains on high-ticket items as well, from cellphones to laptops.

“Every sale is different, we never know what we’ll get,” said Moe. “This year we have a lovely flute and clarinet by silent auction, a digital camera, tablets. And it all supports charities that really are struggling in these economic times, so it’s a win-win for everyone.”
