A sixth-round draft pick — 161st overall — at the age of 19. Two years in the minors racking up more than 300 bruising penalty minutes a season, then into the big show in 2001 to debut against the archrival Toronto Maple Leafs.
Fast-forward 16 seasons. Chris Neil’s NHL Game 1,002 (he played No. 1,000 on Dec. 10 in Los Angeles), nudging 2,500 penalty minutes, nudging 250 points, 173 fights, all with the Ottawa Senators. Though clearly “nudging” is not the 37-year-old Neil’s style. His fans are just fine with that.

When the Senators took to the rink for their pre-game skate Wednesday night, every player was wearing Chris Neil’s familiar jersey — No. 25 — as fans trickled into the Canadian Tire Centre and settled into seats with a souvenir towel honour’s Neil’s milestone.

The game was delayed for a ceremony honouring Neil — who arrived at centre ice with wife Caitlin, daughter Hailey Jean, and sons Cole and Finley — with presentations including a Tiffany crystal, a silver puck, a silver stick — delivered to centre ice by the Senators’ other two 1,000-game players, Daniel Alfredsson and Chris Phillips — and lastly a painting by Tony Harris, who tweeted his congrats.
