It was bottoms up at the Craft Beer Market on Saturday — but not, at least in the sudsy sense of the words, until after class.

Beer yoga was part of the day’s activities at the market, but because the class was held early in the day, there could be no Downward Dog downing, so to speak. The beer consumption had to wait until after class, during legal serving hours.

But the idea was there in spirits (sorry), with participants seen hoisting empty red beer cups in triangulated toasts as they went through their various poses.

So, what, exactly, is beer yoga in its purest, non-prohibition form, you might ask? According to the website of the BierYoga studio in Berlin, it is “the marriage of two great loves — beer and yoga. Both are centuries-old therapies for body, mind and soul. The joy of drinking beer and the mindfulness of yoga compliment (sic) each other, and make for an energizing experience.”

While some couch-dwellers may sit down with a beer from time to time vainly hoping for some sort of enlightenment, more often than not they are left sadly disappointed. Perhaps yoga was the missing ingredient.

“BeerYoga is fun but it’s no joke,” BierYoga says. “We take the philosophies of yoga and pair it with the pleasure of beer-drinking to reach your highest level of consciousness.”

Yoga on Tap owner Ashley Kokelj, who conducted Saturday’s class at the Ottawa beer market, says those in her classes generally have a drink that is included in their purchase, and they decide if they’ll have it during class or after, assuming class is held during the appropriate hours.

“It’s not about the drinking of alcohol, it’s choosing how to responsibly use that in your life,” Kokelj said. “It’s just about pairing different things together and getting people to take a pause, and think about why they’re doing that and having a lot of fun with it.”

Apparently, the origins of beer yoga can be traced back to Oregon, also known for its goat yoga.

Salem, Ore., yoga instructor Mikki Trowbridge has been incorporating the alcoholic beverage into her practice for nearly a half-decade.
