In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
Some of the first skiers in Ottawa were ski jumpers. In the early 1900s, when the Ottawa Improvement Commission, composed of old snowshoers, wouldn’t allow them to clear a hill in Rockcliffe Park for jumping, the skiers secretly cut down the trees at night and built a tower at the top. Rumour has it the skiers bribed the commission’s superintendent of works with a season ticket to ski jumping shows to let the tower stand.
