In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
The Preston Hotel was founded by Antonio Disipio in 1934, but renamed the Prescott in 1941 in recognition of the hotel’s status as the last building between Ottawa and Prescott (about 100 kilometres) along the “Prescott Highway.” In a geographic coincidence, it was also the first hotel travellers from Prescott would hit en route to Ottawa.
Some regulars still call the spot “The Last Chance.”
