In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

One of the oldest homes in Ottawa, replete with a rare and well-preserved walled garden, is open to the public for “quiet enjoyment.” Maplelawn, located on Richmond Road in Westboro, was built in the early 1830s. Its garden is free to walk through in the spring, summer and fall, and visitors can have a meal inside at the Keg Manor.
