Even if ‘Blue Whale’ is a hoax, experts say it shines a light on how social media can push vulnerable teens to do dangerous things in order to feel included, according to Yahoo News.
The Netflix show “13 Reasons Why” is currently the subject of similar controversy. Some mental health experts criticized the show for its presentation of graphic material, including suicide. In the wake of the show’s popularity among young people, U.S. school districts, including Palm Beach County Public Schools, informed parents on how to spot suicide warning signs.
Signs include loss of interest in daily activities, feelings of helplessness, changes in attitude, and more, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
If your teen or someone you know needs help, you can contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), which is open 24/7.
