In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
Watson’s Mill in Manotick was opened in 1860 by Joseph Merrill Currier and Moss Kent Dickinson. After Currier and his wife, Ann Crosby Currier, were married in 1861, they celebrated at the Mill as part of their honeymoon. Tragically, while coming down the stairs from the attic to the second floor, the skirt of Ann’s dress was snagged in a revolving drive shaft. She was thrown against a nearby pillar, dying instantly.
