In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
After public outcry, the Rideau Chapel was saved from destruction in 1972 and eventually reconstructed inside the National Gallery of Canada, close to the trees and flowers of the Garden Court. The chapel, unique in Canadian ecclesiastical architecture, was once the Convent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, a girls’ school.
