In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
It’s believed the death of Ottawa Lt. Alexis Helmer was the inspiration for Capt. John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields.” Helmer was killed instantly after a six-inch, high explosive cannon shell burst near the France-Belgium border. He was buried among the poppies. McCrae, a close friend of Helmer, reportedly wrote the poem shortly after Helmer’s death.
