In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
In 1918, the Spanish Flu epidemic spread from China to North America via ships carrying wounded soldiers from the First World War. The flu ravaged Ottawa, killing 520 residents, many of them young. The mayor at the time, Harold Fisher, closed schools, theatres and even churches as an attempt to stop the flu from spreading. This same flu lead to the opening of the Ottawa Civic Hospital.
