In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
Ottawa’s first policewoman was hired more than 100 years ago, on New Year’s Eve, in 1913. Unlike her male counterparts, Flora Ann Campbell was unarmed and did not wear a badge or uniform. She helped investigate allegations of child neglect and abuse, but mainly dealt with women appearing in court, some of whom were dismissed because they were first-time offenders. Campbell was tasked with helping those women find employment.
